Herodotus and other ancient writers, have transmitted to us the belief of the ancient Greeks that Thessaly was once a huge lake, until terrifying earthquakes tore the mountains into two, creating the Tempe valley, where the lake discharged its waters. When the geologists began their research in the region of Meteora, in the early 20th century, they realized that the ancient Greeks were actually right. They have also come to some other interesting conclusions.. While studying the rocks of Meteora, Pelion and Ossa (Kissavos), they observed that they were full of the fossils of sea creatures, showing that these mountains once formed the bed of the sea.
The rocks of Meteora are a complex of giant dark rocks that rise outside Trikala, close to the first ridges of Pindus and Chasia. The monasteries of Meteora, which are built on the peaks of some of the rocks, today form the second most important monastic community in Greece, after that of Mt Athos. Of the thirty historical monasteries, only eight are still in operation today, and these were included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1988.
Μountain Olympus is Greece’s first National Park, a reference point for history and mythology, a real paradise for mountain climbers and hikers, the habitat for thousands of species of plants and animals. Encased for thousands of years in the haze of myth.
A combined visit to Meteora and Olympus gives participants of this program the opportunity to enjoy the landscape with a few short and easy walking routes.
