The ancient Greeks made ceramic utensils for use in everyday life and not only for showing off. The trophies of competitions such as the Panathenaic amphorae (used for storage) were the exception. The paintings have become the main source of information for the development of Greek fine arts. In Pelion, the Anetopoulos family, will introduce us to the art of ancient and modern pottery as well as its secrets. The group will participate in courses and in combination with the archaeological findings of the region exhibited in the archaeological museum of Volos, they will gain the knowledge of the art of ceramics and pottery.

Birdwatching in Lake Karla

Birdwatcher will be delighted to admire the region around Lake Karla and Mavrovouni, as it is the homeland for many species of birds. Not far from the wonderful seaside city of Volos in Central Greece and the resort villages of the gorgeous Mount Pelion, Lake Karla and its surroundings have been designated as an Important Bird Area (World Heritage Protected Area) and a NATURA 2000 site. Ducks and birds, together with pelicans and flamingos love the lake; on the other hand Mount Mavrovouni stands proudly to attract in particular birds of prey. According to the Hellenic Ornithological Society, over 200 different kinds of birds have been documented in Lake Karla.

The historic little steam train of Pelion

The miniature train of Pelion (so called Moutzouris) has been a dynamic element of culture and development leaving its intense mark on the history. The man who had the inspiration of its manufacturing, under the auspices of the Thessalian Railroads Company, was the Italian engineer Evaristo de Chiriko, father of the famous painter Giorgio de Chrico. Evaristo De Chrico built one of the best in the world railroads, of only 60 cm width, through the olive groves on the slopes of the Centaurs’ Mountain.
A masterpiece which will always be adored for its high esthetics, the harmony of its form and the perfection of its manufacturing.
